2018: A Year In Review

January 1, 2019

Year after year we always seem to say, “this is going to be the best year for music.” And honestly, I think we were right about 2018. An insane amount of music was released this year including stars like Ariana Grande, Post Malone, and 5 Seconds of Summer as well as up and coming artists like Soccer Mommy, Bazzi, and Lovelytheband. Throughout all genres, we’ve had improvement in artists. We also had the boundaries broken in the sounds that make the music, music. With that being said, I have picked an album released from each calendar month to talk about. You should be checking out and appreciating these albums and artists, if you have not done so already.

Fall Out Boy - Mania

January 19, 2018

Suggested Song: "Heaven’s Gate"

Fall Out Boy is one of the most iconic pop-punk bands of our generation. Fall Out Boy has proved to us that they can change to the current generation’s love of music with their change of sound. They’ve created an album curated to new listeners which grew their fanbase to something even more special. With that being said, this album is something we should hold on to.

The Plot In You - Dispose

February 16, 2018

Suggested Song: "The One You Loved"

February was treated with The Plot In You’s fourth studio album. Although this album is a sound change for The Plot In You, it is still very special and meaningful. It’s an energy packed and emotional rollercoaster for the listener. “Dispose” is the album to listen to when you are in need for inspiration or in need for an emotional ride.

Kate Nash - Yesterday Was Forever

March 30, 2018

Suggested Song: "Life In Pink"

Between her acting and singing career, Kate Nash has made a huge statement in the United States with her indie pop and rock album, Yesterday Was Forever. Earlier this year, I discovered Kate Nash through her character Britannica on Netflix’s original series Glow. Since then, I have fallen in love with this album which highlights her unique style and singing voice. Personally, this album is in my top ten of the year and it should be on your radar as well.

Underoath - Erase Me

April 6, 2018

Suggested Song: "Bloodlust"

2018 was the return of Underoath, a Florida rock band founded in 1997. Erase Me is the first release from Underoath in eight years. That’s right. This album is an anthem of rebuilding, growth, and change. If you listen to any album on this list for the year, it has to be this album. There is something about this album that makes it seem as if Underoath never left. Their sound is so profound and powerful and that makes this album so much more special.

Chase Huglin -  Will the Sun Ever Come Back?

May 18, 2018

Suggested Song: "90 Days of Summer"

Chase Huglin’s Will The Sun Ever Come Back is an alternative, laid back indie mix for one who wants to draw meaning out of something simple. In Chase’s first release, “You Deserve an Island,” his songs are only him and his guitar. Now, he’s included other instruments to create a full band effect. He has obviously improved overtime and I’m so glad 2018 was treated with such a lovely album.

Gorillaz - The Now Now

June 29, 2018

Suggested Song: "Tranz"

2018 gave us another album by Gorillaz, an alternative rock band that has been in our lives since the late 90s. This new album features eleven fresh, upbeat, and energetic jams. The idea of The Now Now is centered around the continuation of 2-D’s life story. If you’re looking for an out of the ordinary album, The Now Now is perfect for you.

YUNGBLUD - 21st Century Liability

July 6, 2018

Suggested Song: "I Love You, Will You Marry Me?"

YUNGBLUD, a rising alternative rock musician all the way from the United Kingdom, released his genre-bending protest album, 21st Century Liability. Make sure you give all of your attention to YUNGBLUD because between this new album and his energy filled live performances, he is going to go far very quickly. His energy is so contagious and it’s something we need in the world right now.

Belmont - Belmont

August 17, 2018

Suggested Song: "Pushing Daisies"

Chicago pop-punk band Belmont released their self-titled album this summer through Mutant League Records. This album is a diverse “pop-punk” ten track anthem. Each song explores all genres of music in a way I’ve never listened to before. Personally, Belmont pushed the boundaries of pop-punk in a great way. There’s something in this album for everyone. Belmont makes me realize why I fell in love with pop-punk in the first place.

Bhad Bhabie - 15

September 18, 2018

Suggested Song: "Geek’d"

At first, we all believed Danielle Bregoli was just another story on Dr. Phil. That wasn’t the case. She became an overnight sensation. In a short time, she signed to Atlantic Records and released her very first album, 15. Honestly, this is a great release. It isn’t everyday we see a 15 year old female rap artist rising on the charts. This album just proves that Bhad Bhabie has something, that is only going to improve in the coming years.

Kim Petras - Turn Off The Light, Vol. 1

October 1, 2018

Suggested Song: "Tell Me It’s A Nightmare"

Kim Petras released her album Turn Off The Light, Vol. 1 to kick off the month of October. If you’re looking for a wonderful, spooky-season release, this album is it. These eight songs not only highlight Kim’s abilities of vocals and songwriting but incorporate the reasons on why we love the Halloween season. If you ever start to miss Halloween, turn on this album. It’s almost like the holiday never passed by.

Sabrina Carpenter - Singular: Act I

November 9, 2018

Suggested Song: "Bad Time"

Sabrina Carpenter made November worth it. Over the years, she has had countless releases and chances to sing for her past television show, Girl Meets World. All of her success aside, Singular: Act 1 is hers. Sabrina finally found herself in this release. May I mention that each time I stream “Bad Time,” I get major Taylor Swift vibes. So, Switfites if you’re reading this: make sure you check out “Bad Time” today. You won’t regret it.

CrazyEightyEight - Burning Alive

December 14, 2018

Suggested Song: "Fortune and Glory, Kid"

The year is coming to an end. Can you believe that already? If you missed it, CrazyEightyEight released their debut album. Burning Alive is a super solid album that highlights many different movies and the abilities of the one and only Jarrod Alonge, Lauren Babic, and Patty Walters. The end of 2018 just got a little better when CrazyEightyEight released this album. It’s something that everyone should listen to, or at least give a try.
